Singularity wins International Security Management Certification

06 August 2007

Singularity, in a continuing focus on company-wide operational excellence, today announced that it has achieved IS0 27001:2005 certification for its internal security management processes. ISO 27001 is the new international standard for Information Security Management systems, and is used in conjunction with ISO 17799, the Code of Practice for Information Security Management which lists security control objectives and provides a range of recommended security measures. Singularity underwent a detailed assessment of its information security processes and control mechanisms, conducted by Certification Europe, in order to win the certification. The scope of the audit included reviews of the company's research and development, customer care, network services and professional services departments.

The ISO 27001 certification adds to Singularity's growing list of accreditations for process excellence, which includes certification to Capability Maturity Model (CMMi) level 2, ISO 9001 and TickIT quality accreditation, along with continuing accreditation to the UK's Investors in People quality standard and the winning of the Employer of Choice award in Northern Ireland.

“Achieving this security certification demonstrates to our customers and employees that Singularity takes information security seriously”, said Sean Canavan, Director of Process Excellence and Infrastructure at Singularity. “The certification also reflects the company's focus on continually improving our operational processes – we are constantly seeking ways to improve our performance and how we work with customers, partners and staff.”

Certification of an organisation against ISO 27001 provides assurance that the certified organization has implemented a system for the management of information security in line with best international practices. The certification process involves a two stage audit. In the first stage, auditors review the completeness and appropriateness of key documentation such as the organisation's security policy and risk management plan. The second stage is an in-depth audit of how the security controls identified in the policies and plan are actually implemented on a day to day basis, for example by checking items such as physical access control, the application of data retention rules and the mechanisms used to protect information assets.
