IT Professional of the year for founder19 January 2007 Recognising the impact Derry firm Singularity is making locally and internationally, the British Computer Society has awarded the Northern Ireland IT Professional of the Year award to Padraig Canavan, 45, founder and managing director of Singularity. Founded in 1994, Singularity is now a multi-million dollar business with operations in Derry, Belfast, London, New York, Singapore and India. The award recognises the huge contribution Mr. Canavan's company has made to Northern Ireland and to the IT industry, in terms of both jobs created and the investment in research and high technology skills the firm has made. Padraig founded Singularity in 1994 after having worked in London and the United States developing software for large financial investment organisations. Despite the challenging business environment in Northern Ireland, the firm has grown by an average of 30% for every year of its existence, driven by major sales to the government, financial and telecommunications sectors, and now employs over 180 staff. Singularity has won numerous awards over the years for its financial performance and for its product excellence and technology leadership. The company has been at the forefront of introducing the latest technologies and management processes, for example being one of the first firms in Ireland to obtain CMMi certification, a highly prestigious international accreditation for software quality processes. The BCS award follows Singularity's recent nomination for Company of the Year by the Irish Software Association. “I'm delighted to have been named IT Professional of the Year”, said Mr. Canavan. “The award recognises the work of all of the staff at Singularity who have helped to create a firm that is competing at the highest level internationally and consistently winning. Singularity has achieved great success over the past twelve years but we have even greater ambitions moving into the future, and we are honoured to receive this recognition of our efforts.” Dr James Uhomoibhi, Chairman of the BCS Belfast Branch said, “Padraig is a shining example for all entrepreneurs in the Island of Ireland. He has demonstrated the need for everyone to get involved in the process of developing knowledge based enterprise culture and contribute to the ICT industry in Northern Ireland. His selection as the Award Winner will continue to enhance the standing of this already prestigious award”.
